Alisa Savina, 21, will represent Ireland at next year’s Miss Swimsuit USA International global competition in Cancun, Mexico, having recently won Miss Bikini Ireland.
Alisa moved to Ballymahon from Ukraine ten years ago with her mother Nataliia who owns Nataliia’s Barber Shop on Mardyke Street in Athlone. Alisa also previously worked for the now closed salon Sophia’s Beauty Art in Athlone.
She started modeling for a shop called Rosie’s Closet in Newry when she was just 15 years old. Alisa’s friend saw an ad saying the dress shop was looking for models and decided to apply. “A photographer did a shoot with me and told me that I was noticed. I just love being in front of the camera. When the cameras roll, I feel like a different person,” Alisa explained.
Alisa added: “For me, modeling (as a career) has always been at the top. Your parents want you to have a backup plan.” The young model studied Business and Travel Airline Studies and Cabin Crew Training at the Portobello Institute in Dublin for a year as she also previously had ambitions to work for Emirates but is currently opting out more focused on her modeling career.
Alisa and said entering Miss Bikini Ireland was completely out of her comfort zone. “Because of my previous experience, I definitely felt more confident in what I was doing and I just felt like the competition would take me to another level,” she said.
According to Alisa, regular training with her personal trainer made her feel confident enough to compete for Miss Bikini Ireland.
“Actually, my personal trainer inspired me to take part because I felt like I wasn’t physically prepared for it.
Speaking about representing Ireland in the global Miss Swimsuit USA International competition, Alisa said: “I’m so excited. I’ll just give myself time to prepare and then I’ll be ready to go next year. You will meet many different photographers and girls from all over the world. It’s a good opportunity to show yourself. I just meet people and get more opportunities from them.”
Alisa was due to enter the competition this year but felt unprepared and wanted to work on her social media presence ahead of the competition.
In the international competition, models from all over the world appear as catwalk models and photo shoots and answer questions on stage. “It improves my portfolio and it’s really good to present myself in front of a huge audience. You have to pretend you’re familiar.”
Speaking about the current war in Ukraine, Alisa said that Ukraine is a very calm country and the war is a very big shock that people did not expect. “People couldn’t go to the stores because of bombs and things exploding.”
Alisa still has family in Ukraine and helped her grandparents get to Ireland when they traveled to Poland. “My grandparents only wanted to leave at the last minute. In my city (Severodonetsk) things got very bad and I convinced them to leave for a couple of months. I flew to Poland to meet her.”
Alisa said that her grandmother had only been on an airplane once before. Her grandparents now live with her mother outside of Ballymahon.
Alisa is originally from the town of Zhytomir in the north western half of Ukraine but lived in the town of Severodonetsk for six years before moving to Ireland.
