Varlien Vyner-Brooks: “He was a versatile man and we will miss him dearly”

By David Carr

Northern Jump Racing mourns the loss of former commentator, longtime owner and ‘gentleman’ Varlien Vyner-Brooks at the age of 88.

A lawyer by trade, he owned horses for over 60 years and provided a reference when Ginger McCain received a training license at Southport in the 1960s.

After retiring in Cumbria he had horses with Cartmel trainer Jimmy Moffatt who said: ‘I trained for him for 15 years and he had 28 winners. Altruism holds the course record at Cartmel [over 2m1f] and Varlien was very proud of it – he nearly fainted when I told him that, he was so delighted.

“You often have bad news to share with an owner, but I’ve never seen anyone take it so easy, we never had a crossword.”

Vyner-Brooks, who was also a gardener and a judge at the Chelsea Flower Show, called races from Bangor north to Scotland and was known for his rich voice and precise diction.

Jonathan Turner, who took Vyner-Brooks’ place on the northern route when he retired in 1986, said: “He was old-fashioned and very accurate with binoculars and a microphone around his neck. He was a versatile man and we will miss him dearly.”

Paying further tribute, Moffatt added: “He has climbed all the Munro mountains in Scotland after the age of 50 and was met at the top of the last by Bear Grylls, who was also best man at his son Charles’ wedding.

“He was a fantastic guy, one of the best. He was a true gentleman with a great understanding of racing and horses. He was interested in their development and welfare and it was a pleasure to train for him.

“I have great memories of him. He was very caring, a lovely man. Everyone seemed to know him and he will be sorely missed.”

Vyner-Brooks is survived by his wife Elizabeth and four children. Burial details have yet to be announced.
