Emmerdale spoilers to follow.
Emmerdale‘s 50th anniversary gave fans a punch in the gut by killing off fan-favorite character Liv Dingle.
It might have come as a shock to fans, especially given that Liv has been through so much and is such a popular character. As it turns out, it was actress Isobel Steele’s decision that she made a year ago.
“I first told the producers I wanted to leave in September 2021,” Steele said The mirror.

“I joined when I was 15. I knew I didn’t want to stay forever and at some point you had to make that call. Last September felt like the right time to move on and I wanted to give the producers a year to come up with a great outcome for Liv. As an actress you are taking a risk if you decide to leave.
“When they called me in April to say Liv was going to die in a storm, I had mixed feelings. I was excited because it meant at the 50th celebrations I knew it meant I was never coming back.”
Steele explained that the story might come as a shock, but sometimes young people die suddenly and their loved ones are thrown into the grieving process, which can be incredibly difficult.
“I’m very proud of how we filmed these heartbreaking scenes and they’re some of the best I’ve been a part of on the soap opera, but it was also very emotional,” she added.

“It felt so real and like I was actually dying and saying goodbye for good. I was really really upset because I knew I was going forever. I didn’t have to pretend to cry because I was crying anyway. We were all emotional.”
In the first aftermath of the storm, villagers will try to rebuild and return to normal, but there will still be plenty of drama.
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
