According to insightful display analyst Ross Young, OLED display technology could finally come to the iPhone SE if the device is updated.

Young recently said that Apple is considering several decisions regarding the screen size of the next-gen iPhone SE, including the display technology the device will use. Young explained that the 5.7- to 6.1-inch displays Apple is considering will feature LCD technology, just like the current “iPhone SE,” but the company is also considering simply going for a 6, 1-inch OLED display, as already offered on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.

The iPhone X was the first OLED “iPhone” launched in 2017, and since the launch of the “iPhone 12” in 2020, all of Apple’s major “iPhone” models have OLED displays. OLED display technology is more expensive than LCD, but offers better efficiency, “true” black, high contrast and high dynamic range. It’s possible that OLED panels have dropped in price enough for Apple to use them for the entry-level iPhone SE, especially since it’s not scheduled to be released before 2024.

Chinese website mydrivers and leaker Jon Prosser believe the “iPhone SE” will transition to an “iPhone” XR-like design in its next incarnation, which would involve removing the home button and adding a “notch” at the top of the display. The change seems likely as Apple’s “SE” products have always used the designs of older devices.
