EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Richard E. Grant’s Oscar-winning “Spat” with podcast host Richard Herring

When Richard E. Grant was nominated for an Oscar, he portrayed himself as a blushing genius in a social media campaign that featured celebrity selfies and exuberant videos that garnered him a legion of new fans.

Now, however, another side of his character has emerged, making him sound like a humorless, self-centered Luvvie.

Comedian Richard Herring has revealed that an interview he did with Grant was banned by the Withnail And I star after he joked about the actor’s talent.

Speaking of his RHLSTP podcast, Herring says, “A few have gone wrong without my noticing. Richard E. Grant wouldn’t let me delete his, and I don’t know why.

“It was one of the best we’ve ever done… And he blocked me on Twitter so I can’t even ask him.”

Adds Herring, “He hadn’t won the Oscar, but he had been nominated, and everyone before him was like, ‘He’s totally giddy and acting up because he’s trying to get voters excited, he’s just playing a show.’

“And he said, ‘Yeah, that was really upsetting to me because I was just enjoying the thing.’

“I said, ‘Yeah, and if you were that good an actor, you would have won the Oscar, right?’

Speaking on the Walking The Dog podcast, Herring adds, “It occurred to me at that moment that he might walk away or it might be the best comedy of all time… if he takes it right, which was a joke .

‘He seemed to like it then. I think it was the overall look – he felt like I was upsetting him, which I wasn’t.

Grant could not be reached for comment.

Sandra Howard is hoping supporters of the two rival candidates in the Tory leadership contest will put an end to hostilities at the launch party for her new novel Love At War.

“I know Tory MPs and senior statesmen who support both Rishi and Liz will be there,” says the author-turned model, who is married to former Tory leader Lord Howard.

“But while they disagree on taxes and politics, I think it’s very unlikely that anyone would get into heated political debates at a book launch.”

Freya’s wild bond with a lion cub

Most teenagers would be scared of coming face-to-face with a lion, but Freya Aspinall is made of sterner stuff.

The 18-year-old, who spent her childhood at her father Damian’s game parks in Kent, shared this photo of her pet lion, Azi, nibbling on her arm.

Freya says she has a close bond with the one-year-old.

“We had to hand raise Azi because his mother rejected him,” she says. “It allowed me to develop a very natural relationship with him. No training, no taming. Pure love and trust.’

He may be vegan, but that hasn’t stopped Chris Packham from sinking his teeth into the BBC, which pays him handsomely to present Springwatch. After seeing coverage of the Tory leadership debate, Packham whines: “Why is this miserable fiasco on BBC One?”

Countryside Alliance’s Tim Bonner tells me that Packham “should be free to express his views… but the BBC should also make it clear that they cannot employ presenters who will destroy their reputation for impartiality”.

A BBC source says Packham is not bound by their impartiality guidelines as he does not work in news or current affairs.

Anthea’s wedding joy. . . but it’s still not her own

Anthea Turner announced her engagement to socialite Mark Armstrong almost three years ago, but she was bludgeoned down the aisle by ex-stepdaughter Amelia Bovey.

The former Blue Peter presenter, 62, has remained close to the three daughters of her second husband, Grant Bovey.

“Don’t we all love a wedding,” says Anthea, whose wedding in Italy was postponed because of the pandemic. You and Armstrong, above, are now planning a winter ceremony here.

“Everyone is so excited about the winter glamour,” she adds.

Armstrong appears to be smitten with “summer glamour” – he was later pictured wearing his fiancee’s hat.
