‘I struggle with the postpartum every day’: Mena Suvari, 43, is opening up about motherhood 18 months after giving birth to her first baby

American Beauty alum Mena Suvari gave birth to her first child — son Christopher Alexander Hope — maybe 18 months ago, but she’s still battling postpartum depression.

“I struggle with the postpartum every day,” the 43-year-old SAG Award winner confessed to Rachel Bilson’s Broad Ideas podcast last Sunday.

“That’s all I’m doing next month is testing my hormones [and bloodwork]. So yes, it’s all very real.”

Mena doesn’t want to sugarcoat it anymore because “it doesn’t do anyone any good if I sit here and pretend I’m perfect, and I pretend I’ve managed to do it by doing what I don’t do.”

Suvari argued that even though her baby is “perfectly healthy” and her third husband Mike Hope is “wonderful,” she has “a right to those emotions.”

“I remember sitting on our balcony and saying, ‘I have to get out of the house. I need to get out of the house,'” the Rhode Island-born beauty recalled.

“My husband, he said, ‘You can go. You can go for a walk.” But I didn’t think I could… I’m still struggling with it. That I don’t have to be there [my son’s] Face 24/7 to raise a good person because of my fear. It is much work.’

Mena continued, “We’re all trying to survive and do our best, and we have to help each other… I’m not trying [hide] too much of. If I can take some of the sadness away from someone, I want to do that.

“I’m ready to be that person because it breaks my heart to ever think of anyone else going through a lot of what I’ve been through. So it makes sense to give in. That’s how I live my life.”

Suvari originally put the prop man on the set of Hallmark’s movie of the week, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, and they secretly married two years later in 2018.

It would help if the author of The Great Peace had a close relationship with her parents — Ando and Candice — but instead she “just learned to do everything on her own.”

Mena was grateful to speak to the 41-year-old OC graduate, who mothered daughter Briar Rose, eight, from her 11-year on-off relationship with Jumper co-star and fiancé Hayden Christensen, which ended in 2017.

Suvari has six upcoming films, including her role as the late Oscar winner Jane Wyman in Sean McNamara’s long-delayed Ronald Reagan biopic, due out early next year.
