British stars Harry Styles and Adele are among the front-runners at the 2023 Grammy Awards, which join Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce – who will now join husband Jay-Z for the title of most-nominated artist of all time – for the greatest awards of the evening were nominated.
Beyonce leads the nominations with nine, bringing her career total to 88 – now the same as her rapper husband, who has five this year for his efforts writing DJ Khaled’s song God Did, as well as his work on the album Renaissance and the single Break of his woman received my soul.
She is against it styles, Adele, lamar and Lizzo in the categories “Album of the Year”, “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year” are three of the categories Grammys the biggest prizes of the ceremony.
Beyonce, the most decorated woman in the show’s history with 28 wins, could break the late Hungarian-British conductor Georg Solti’s record for most awards won if she takes home four gongs next year. Solti holds the record since 1997 with 31 Grammys.
The nominations once again pitted her against Adele – the British star won 2017’s Album of the Year but said on stage the award should have gone to US artist Lemonade.
After returning to the limelight in 2021 with fourth album 30, which topped both the UK and US charts, Adele was also nominated in categories like Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Music Film for Adele: One Night Only – what the singer credited Comeback with an interview with Oprah Winfrey and a concert appearance at the Griffith Observatory.
Meanwhile, Styles continued an outstanding year in which he was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize. The third album to top the charts, Harry’s House, received a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Non-Engineering (Non-Classical) Album, while the hit track As It Was received nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album. Solo Performance, Song of the Year, Best Music Video, and Record of the Year.
With 91 categories celebrating genres from rock and rap to country and comedy in 2023, Lamar is the second leader with eight knots, while Adele and Brandi Carlile have seven and Styles joins other artists like Mary J Blige and DJ Khaled six connects.
Rising British indie rock duo Wet Leg, who were also nominated for the Mercury Prize earlier this year, and tipped by Barack Obamano less – alongside Eurovision 2021 winner Maneksin also received a nomination in one of the major categories, Best New Artist.
Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, Steve Lacy and Bad Bunny are also among the notable nominees – with Bad Bunny making history by being nominated for First Spanish Language Album of the Year for Un Verano Sin Ti.
Heralded by the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Machine Gun Kelly and Smokey Robinson, nearly half of the 2023 nominees are women and more than half are black, according to the Recording Academy, which organizes the awards.
The new categories include Songwriter of the Year and Alternative Music Performances, which Recording Academy Chief Executive Harvey Mason Jr. said will help diversify the 65th edition of the annual awards. There will also be a special merit award for best social change song based on lyrical content that addresses a current social issue.
Joe Wadsworth, musicologist and founder of The Online Recording Studio, said next year’s awards ceremony could be “the most successful for British artists in a generation” with Adele and Styles among the big nominees.
“Nods were expected for Adele and Harry Styles in many of the main categories, but it’s fantastic to see recognition for the likes of Wet Leg as well,” he said. “The Isle of Wight band’s three nominations, including Best New Artist, will surely see them miss out on last month’s Mercury Prize.”
