Geri Horner receives an honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University in recognition of her commitment to women and children

Geri Horner looked in good spirits as she received a certificate of honor from Sheffield Hallam University at the Ponds Forge International Sports Center in Sheffield on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old Spice Girls star received the award in recognition of her work promoting and defending the rights of children, young people and women over the past 25 years.

The hitmaker wore traditional college robes as she posed with her PhD ahead of the ceremony.

Geri also wore a white shirt and tan pants, while adding height to her body with a pair of heels.

The singer wore her tresses in loose waves and completed her look with a light makeup palette.

Honorary doctorates are awarded by universities to recognize outstanding achievements in a specific field or services to the community. Sheffield Hallam has been awarding it since gaining university status in 1993.

“I sincerely believe that education is a superpower, empowering young people with the confidence, perspective and experience to pursue their life goals and dreams.

‘I am delighted with the award and very much look forward to returning to Sheffield Hallam for the graduation ceremony later this year.’

The announcement followed a visit to the university, where Geri met with Professor Sir Chris Husbands, Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam, and media arts and communications students.

She learned about South Yorkshire Children’s University’s initiative, which helps bring hope and opportunity to hundreds of children and young people across the region, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, by offering inclusive extra-curricular enrichment activities.

Geri also met with women’s rights expert Dr. Suni Toor, whose award-winning work has helped transform support for women victims of violence in India, and learned about Sheffield Hallam’s Athena Swan initiatives to support and transform gender equality in higher education and research.

Professor Sir Chris Husbands, Vice Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, said: “Geri Halliwell-Horner’s contribution to raising the aspirations of children and young people and her commitment to promoting women’s rights are consistent with the university’s mission to transform lives

“I am delighted that she accepted our offer to award her an honorary doctorate in recognition of her philanthropic work and look forward to welcoming her to our community.”

Geri rose to fame as part of the Spice Girls in the 1990s, selling over 100 million records worldwide to become the best-selling female group of all time.

She has continued to use her considerable media platform and philanthropic work to advocate for children’s literacy and access to education and to inspire women of all backgrounds to be their best.

Geri is also Associate Patron of Breast Cancer Care; Inaugural Ambassador of the Royal Commonwealth Society with a particular focus on children’s education and literacy; a longtime Ambassador of The Prince’s Trust and Childline and was a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Women for 10 years.
