Military Order completed a fourtimer for Charlie Appleby and William Buick

Wednesday: Neumarkt

Championship trainer Charlie Appleby and champion jockey William Buick have cleaned up most of the youth races since racing returned to the Rowley Mile last month, fittingly keeping the momentum going with a 68-1 four-timer on the two-year-old’s day at the track.

The best was saved to the last by the Godolphin team, with Stablestar Adayar’s younger brother Military Order scoring in the Future Stayers Novice mile, which the Stable last won with eventual Classic winner Hurricane Lane in 2020.

Appleby said: “I really like this horse. He makes everything so easy at home that he doesn’t know what the races are about. He has the same profile as his brother and we will put him away after that.”

The winner was cut to 25-1 (from 40) by Paddy Power to emulate Adayar by winning the derby next year and headed a double from the court with newcomer Ancient Rules in second place.

Exciting prospect

Regal Honor started the Blue Haul in the 7f beginner, but it didn’t look likely until it hit the ascending floor as it mastered market rival Greek Order.

The 5-6 favorite is certainly wisely bred as he is a half brother to two-time Group 1 winner Rizeena and is held in some respect by Appleby.

He said: “William said he was still raw and he needed to nudge him a bit. He’s a horse we like and we’re going to put him away now. Whether we take him back over a mile and then go to a mile and a quarter is up for debate, but he’s an exciting prospect for next year.”

The Moulton Paddocks team won the two 1m2f races on the map, including the rookie they won a year ago with recent St Leger runner-up New London. Cannon Rock succeeded this time and rallied to beat favorite Sir Laurence Graff.

Whether the Fastnet Rock gelding son will match his stablemate’s exploits is up for debate, but he looks certain to be successful over a mile and a half next year.

Appleby said: “Fair play to the team at home as Cannon Rock didn’t wow us when it first started but has since moved forward. Hopefully the handicapper isn’t too harsh.”

Just 35 minutes later, Godolphin was back in the winners’ pen as Castle Way welcomed the return to a more conventional route in the Future Stayers’ nursery. The 3-1 chance was out on the contours of Epsom last time out but showed the dip wasn’t a problem when he hit by three lengths.

A three-hour drive from Cheltenham was more than worth it for David Crompton, a member of the Ontoawinner syndicate, as Gold As Glass landed the Division 1 restricted novice 7f mares.

The 16:1 chance in the race was the less promising of two runners trained by Marco Botti.

Crompton said: “Expectations were low coming here as Marco always thought she would be more of a three year old. That was a real bonus.”
